Sport

Physical Education plays a vital role in the education of all our children. Our focus is the child and their developing physical competence. We want our pupils to be confident participators who always strive for their best at team and individual level, and instil in them a life-time enjoyment of physical activity.

Curriculum

All the younger pupils have use of our hall, astroturf area, climbing wall and outdoor adventure playground to apply their physical strengths and learn gymnastics and ball skills. The girls in Pre-Prep also have weekly swimming lessons at Wimbledon Leisure Centre and participate in a range of individual and team based activities, developing teamwork and positive attitudes.

Girls are taught athletics, dance, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis. We also provide opportunities to experience as many sports as possible, such as cricket, football and tag rugby in order to foster enjoyment, co-operation, tolerance and self-esteem.

Each girl in the Prep Department is timetabled for a PE and Games session each week. In the summer term they are transported to well-maintained sports fields in Coombe Lane for athletics and rounders. Netball and hockey take place on our floodlit, all-weather astro-turf.

Competition

From Year 3 onwards, teams are selected to compete in local events and tournaments in athletics, hockey, netball and rounders. After-school fixtures are arranged against other schools for as many children as possible. All girls are encouraged to attend regular training sessions at lunchtime, before or after school, where they learn how important commitment, team play and effort are to success.

Throughout the school all the girls participate in a variety of Inter-House sporting competition. All junior pupils take part in Inter-House netball, football or hockey, encouraging skill development, fair play and a competitive spirit. In the summer term Sports Days are organised for the younger and older girls, where everyone is given the opportunity to compete for their House, as well as for individual honours.

Extra Curricular

Sport is an important and vibrant part of the girls’ lives at the Ursuline Preparatory School. In addition to the major team sports, there is a rich programme of extra curricular sporting activities including ballet, cross country, martial arts, sailing and skipping. The emphasis is on fun, participation and personal fitness.
